Unique series of documentaries on Dutch Design
first Dutch Profiles on-line

Dutch Profiles is a series of short documentaries on Dutch Design. Each Profile highlights the work of one designer or design company. The first series of 17 Dutch Profiles can now be watched on-line at www.dutchprofiles.com. Dutch Profiles are a Dutch Design Fashion and Architecture (DutchDFA) initiative. They are produced by Submarine, a cross-medium production studio based in Amsterdam. In the end a total of 100 Profiles will be produced, which together form a kaleidoscopic overview of contemporary Dutch Design; accessible for everyone at all times.

The typically Dutch character of Dutch Design
The examples of Dutch Design that have been selected for the Dutch Profiles together provide a very diverse but simultaneously coherent image of Dutch fashion, architecture and design. The short documentaries highlight the explicit ‘Dutch’ character of Dutch Design: which is conceptual, innovative, social and pragmatic. The first series includes portraits of MVRDV, 2012 Architecten, Jurgen Bey, Claudy Jongstra, Gerard Unger, Paul Mijksenaar, Marlies Dekkers, Alexander van Slobbe, G-Star and Vlisco.

Starting point for each Profile is always the exploration of one project by a designer set against the context of earlier work. Subsequently we look in more detail at the design mentality and the personal viewpoints about good design in our rapidly changing world”, states Geert van de Wetering, Creative Director at Submarine.

New Profiles will be added on a regular basis in the near future. An independent editorial committee selects the Dutch designers and design companies from the broad range that is active in the Netherlands.

Dutch Profiles as a continuous international exhibition
Dutch Profiles is a ‘travelling exhibition’, compiled of digital images, which can be used at different locations across the world, including exhibitions and trade fairs, presentations and conferences. The premiere of Dutch Profiles, for instance, took place on 4 September in Mumbai (India) at the Design Yatra, an architecture and design conference for which the Netherlands were the partner country this year. During the celebration of NY400 in New York, the programme Pioneers of Change will feature a selection of the Dutch Profiles in one of the officers’ quarters on Governors Island. However, the Dutch Profiles will also travel the world via the Internet, via YouTube, Dutch Embassy websites, designers’ websites and on www.dutchprofiles.com.
